P01 vs P59:
P01 vs P59:
which PCM do I have?
GM used two main controllers across the Gen III LS era. They tune the same way, but knowing which you have saves confusion.
The two controllers
| P01 | P59 | |
|---|---|---|
| Flash size | 512 KB | 1 MB |
| Typical years | 1999–2003 trucks, LS1/LS6 cars | 2003–2007 Classic trucks and SUVs |
| Common hardware numbers | 9354896, 12200411 | 12586242, 12586243 family |
| Network | J1850 VPW (Class 2) | J1850 VPW (Class 2) |
| TuneBench | Read · Log · Write | Read · Log · Write |
Same family, different room
Both are Motorola 68332-based units that talk on GM's Class 2 (J1850 VPW) bus. The P59 doubled the flash to 1 MB, giving later operating systems more room. The tables you care about, VE, MAF, spark, fuel, idle, limits and transmission, are there on both.
How to tell which you have
- Easiest: connect TuneBench and read. It reports the hardware number, OS ID and controller.
- Check the PCM label for the hardware number.
- Model year is a hint, not a rule: 2003 and some 2004 trucks can be either.
Operating system IDs
Each calibration has an 8-digit operating system (OS) ID, like 12212156 (a common 2002 Silverado 5.3). The definition (XDF) must match the OS, which is why TuneBench reads the OS first and loads the matching definition automatically.
