The HP Tuners alternative
that lives on your phone.
HP Tuners VCM Suite is the industry standard, and it covers thousands of vehicles. If you are tuning your own Gen III LS, car or truck, you don't need to spend $500 and carry a laptop to do it.
The short answer
For a 1999 to 2007 GM Gen III LS with a P01 or P59 PCM, TuneBench does what most people buy HP Tuners for: read the PCM, edit fuel, spark, airflow, idle, rev limit and transmission tables, log, correct the tune from the log and write it back. It does it from an iPhone or Android phone with a $140 Bluetooth adapter, and a vehicle license is $50 instead of roughly $100 in HP Tuners credits.
HP Tuners wins on coverage: Ford, Mopar, Gen IV/V GM, diesels, transmissions and thousands of late-model vehicles, plus pro features like custom OS patches and a full scan tool. If you tune for customers across many platforms, buy HP Tuners. If you want to tune your own LS, read on.

Why tune on a phone?
Because tuning happens in the car. Logging with a laptop means balancing it on the passenger seat, a USB cable across the console and a dead battery in an hour. Your phone is already mounted, already charged and already connected. TuneBench was designed for that screen first, with big touch targets, one-handed table editing and a logger built for a dash mount.
When you want a big screen, sign in on a Mac or PC. Your tunes, versions and licenses come with you.
The workflow, compared
With HP Tuners, a typical VE tune means: log in VCM Scanner, set up a histogram, copy it, open VCM Editor, select the VE table, paste special "multiply by % / 2", smooth, save, write. It works and it's how a generation of tuners learned.
In TuneBench: log a drive, open the VE table, tap Log, pick "Wideband VE" (or fuel trims), check the preview, tap Apply. Same math, with sample-count filters, strength and a max-change clamp built in. See tune from log.
What TuneBench does not do (yet)
- Vehicles outside GM Gen III P01/P59 for writing. Gen IV E38/E67 is next.
- Custom operating system patches like speed density or flex fuel conversions.
- Full scan tool functions such as bidirectional controls and module programming.
If you need those today, HP Tuners is the right tool, and TuneBench can still be your free logger and phone-side editor. TuneBench opens and exports standard .bin files.
Can I move from HP Tuners to TuneBench?
TuneBench works with raw binary calibrations. Read your PCM with TuneBench (free), and it saves a full stock backup. If you already have a tune you like, re-create the changes in TuneBench or bring a .bin exported from another tool, then license the vehicle and write it. Logs from VCM Scanner exported as CSV can be imported straight into the tune-from-log tool.
Verdict
HP Tuners is the better business tool. TuneBench is the better way to tune your own Gen III LS. It's cheaper, it's wireless, it's on the phone you already carry, and it does the correction math for you. Try the demo vehicle for free and decide for yourself.
Keep the $450.
Free to read, edit and log. License a Gen III LS for $50 when you're ready to write.
